Choosing the right travel insurance

Anyone who’s had their belongings stolen, lost their luggage, or fallen ill abroad will testify that travel insurance is not an optional extra – it’s a necessity.
It may seem like a waste of money to insure yourself for two weeks away, but there are plenty of good reasons to do it:
- Holiday destinations can often be crime hotspots
- We all know how often airlines seem to put luggage on the wrong plane
- A change in diet and weather can cause problems for the healthiest stomach.
You’re far more likely to need insurance benefits on holiday than at any other time of the year. Not only are the risks greater, but if you injure yourself or fall ill you may have to opt for the cheapest hospital and could still be worrying about the bill when you should be resting.
Finding the best travel insurance
Travel insurance can be surprisingly good value, from around £15 for a two week European holiday. In fact, it’s even possible that you’re already insured without knowing it, so check first: If you’ve been on holiday already this year, did you get a 12 month policy? Some current accounts and credit cards also give you free travel insurance, so check your account small-print.
The most important aspect of your travel insurance policy is not the price: it’s the features. If you’re taking out travel insurance in the first place, you should check that it’s going to be useful, otherwise you might as well not bother.
- Would you be able to afford the excess in an emergency?
- Does it cover you for reasonable expenses? Don’t forget that you’ll be using private hospitals abroad, and in-patient treatment can be expensive.
- Do you have to pay the bill in full and settle up with the insurer later? Policies like this are unrealistic for most people, who just don’t have the spare cash to pay a bill that may run into the thousands.
