If you're female and looking for the best deal on car insurance, you could save money with a women's car insurance.
A company that specialises in insurance for women drivers could offer you a better price than a traditional insurer - but be sure to shop around.
That depends on your circumstances and the insurer you opt for. Shop around before you buy insurance and let the insurers know you’re undecided – they may offer to match or better your lowest quote. Companies that specialise in insurance for women drivers include Sheilas’ Wheels, Diamond, Ladybird and Girl Motor, and most women will find they’re cheaper than traditional insurers.
Whether or not women have fewer car accidents than men depends very much on which study or statistics you’re looking at. But it has been proven time and time again that women’s accidents are generally far less serious than men’s. They’re more likely to involve a few scrapes in a car park than a crumpled bonnet, and many drivers won’t bother to make a claim for this kind of thing.
Women also generally drive slower than men and clock up fewer miles, giving them less opportunity to have accidents. This means fewer claims and less money being paid out over all, so having an all-female customer base enables insurers to offer low premiums for their insurance packages.
It isn’t sexist – it’s just good business sense. If you’re a male driver, feel free to take out a policy with Diamond or Sheilas’ Wheels - you’re not being excluded, but you’d be better off with another insurer. Companies like this simply target their marketing at women, ensuring that most of their customers are female.
Because this saves them money, these savings can be passed back to their female customers. If they started offering low quotes to men as well, their costs would rise and so would their premiums. There are insurers available that cater for high-risk groups such as young males, but these companies have to charge higher premiums to cover their costs.
